The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has unveiled Revision 2 of the Nigerian Gas Transportation Network Code at the 20th edition of OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week 2026 in Lagos.

Introduced in 2020 and initially revised in 2024, the Code covers the rules governing access to and use of shared gas pipeline infrastructure, including third-party access, capacity booking, gas nominations, balancing and metering.

The latest revision also includes clearer rules on gas shrinkage factors, helping to address avoidable losses arising from gas transportation and measurement.

A key highlight is the introduction of initial provisions for regional pipeline networks, including the proposed Trans-Saharan Pipeline to Algeria and Trans-African Pipeline to Morocco, laying the groundwork for more harmonised rules for cross-border gas transportation.

The revision comes as major infrastructure projects, including the OB3 pipeline, the ELPS Midline Compressor and the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) pipeline, advance efforts to increase Nigeria’s gas transportation capacity from 2.2 to 4.4 billion cubic feet per day.

With the implementation of Revision 1, bringing an increase in shippers on the pipeline network and a 30 per cent reduction in gas imbalances across the Western network, it is hoped that Revision 2 will bring a similar uplift.

The Association of Local Distributors of Gas welcomes the revision of the Code. We believe that clear and consistent rules around gas transport remain critical for improving operational efficiency, strengthening accountability, promoting access & affordability and building investor confidence across the gas value chain.
